Our Story

A Foundation of Faith

First Salem Evangelical Church and Community Center, Inc. was founded in 1982 as Salem Haitian Baptist Church by the late  Reverend Cedeon Metius Olibrice.  Following his passing in 2020, we continue to be rooted in biblical principles, upholding the teachings of Christ Jesus by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, under the leadership of ordained Pastor Odiles Nelson

A Journey of Perseverance

First Salem Evangelical Church and Community Center began in a house with a small group of members. After a few Sundays, the landlord informed them that he rented a house not a church facility. The church then moved to a section of a restaurant. Later, the church rented a place in NW 2nd Avenue and 64th street in Miami, Florida. In 1990, Salem purchased its 1st location at 140 NW 79th street. It was a former office building. The congregation converted it into a sanctuary.

Anchored in Purpose

This ministry has faced many challenges; yet,  many founding members remain as an anchor and testament to the next generation. Under the new leadership, First Salem continues to preach and put into practice The Word as it is written in the Bible.

Our Enduring Mission

Our evangelical mission is to work the harvest field across the generations that remain to bring precious Souls into the storehouse of the Lord by building up individuals, families, and communities with God’s saving message of forgiveness and love through Christ Jesus our Lord under the leading of the Holy Spirit.  Join us at First Salem, where His peace awaits you.

Our Values

Our values are at the heart of everything we do. We strive to create a vibrant community where faith and action meet to make the world a better place, guided by the following principles:

Faith

We are rooted in the teachings of Christ Jesus, trusting in His promises and relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
We encourage each person to grow in their personal faith through a deeper relationship with God.
We believe that faith is not just a belief system, it is made complete by our actions. It inspires us to serve and love others, creating a lasting legacy that empowers, reaching beyond our own lives.

Hope

We hold onto the hope that is found in Jesus Christ, which gives us purpose and strength in every situation.
We are a beacon of light, offering encouragement and a positive outlook, even in the midst of challenges.
We work to build a better future for our community, fueled by the conviction that God has good plans for us.

Love

We are committed to the unconditional, selfless love that Christ  Jesus demonstrated.
We strive to show compassion, kindness, and generosity to all people, regardless of their background or circumstances.
We believe that love is the greatest of all virtues and the foundation of a healthy community and family.

Integrity

We believe in being honest, trustworthy, and righteous in all our dealings.
We aim to live consistently, with our actions, matching our words and our deeds, reflecting our beliefs.
We hold ourselves accountable to God and to one another, striving to do what is right, even when no one is watching.

Commitment

We are dedicated to actively engaging with and serving our local area.
We focus on community betterment, social activism, and youth empowerment.
We believe that by working together, we can create a stronger, more just, and more compassionate world for everyone.

Fellowship

We are a family in Christ, united by our shared faith and love for God.
We provide a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging, support, and friendship.
We are committed to celebrating together, supporting one another through hardships, and building each other up in our spiritual journeys.
